Kestrel on the Kitsap

February 15, 2018 - Kestrel Communications

Kestrel Communications has migrated from the Denver, Colorado region to the Pacific Northwest. Following a relocation and sabbatical in 2017, Douglas and Rebecca Cramer are now actively developing opportunities to be of service to the communities of the thriving Kitsap Peninsula in the West Puget Sound region of Washington, with wild woodsy Olympic National Park to the west and Seattle a ferry ride to the east.

In 2018, we will be taking major steps towards fully drawing on our extensive professional experiences, skills, and passions in order to participate in fruitful projects that further healthy and sustainable economic growth here in our precious adopted home on the Salish Sea. The Kitsap Economic Development Alliance says of the region:

International Delegation Service in Lebanon

September 14, 2017 - Douglas Cramer

In the summer of 2014, I traveled to Lebanon as part of a delegation to an international gathering of the leadership of the Antiochian Orthodox Church, the largest global body of Arab Christians and their fellow believers, who for many years contracted with me to oversee their English language Internet work.

This opportunity allowed me exposure to a vast range of challenges and learning experiences, from performing at my peak after 30 hours of travel, to overcoming cultural and language barriers, to discovering how to fruitfully contribute to a diverse team working in an even more diverse setting as we spent time in Beirut, Byblos, Balamand, and the mountains near the Syrian border. Lebanon is a small multi-ethnic and multi-faith nation on the edge of a war zone, straining under refugees fleeing Syria, while simultaneously a vibrant modern society.

The Cost of Working for Free

March 16, 2017 - Rebecca Cramer

A fellow artist once chided me for working for free as a makeup artist and production designer, believing that it devalued my work as an artist. In my mind, I believed it a good way to gain exposure as a new artist, network with others in the industry, and get practical experience. However, it is a slippery slope. It is far too easy to be taken for granted and fall into a place where one's work loses value because it was produced for free. I don't have the answers, on this topic. But it is good to read another's exposure of the issue. Jessica Hefland explores this in her article Why Are Designers Still Expected To Work For Free? in reference to Doubleday's recent announcement of an open competition for the design of the cover of Dan Brown's upcoming book. Undoubtedly this will stir up the hankering to submit for gratis. But should it?

Cover Girl!

January 10, 2017 - Rebecca Cramer

As a big fan of the Fox hit-series Sleepy Hollow, I was ecstatic to get the chance to chat it up with Lyndie Greenwood for the January issue of Jute Fashion Magazine.

Jute was founded by fashion photographer Lynzi Judish and hair and makeup artist Kadie Murphy in 2013.  The first issue of Jute launched in September of 2013 and has been constantly growing ever since. Jute magazine celebrates the individual fashionista. It’s about fashion at all levels and finding your own style by mixing and matching. We love everything from Gucci to Guess to Goodwill. It’s not about where the clothes come from, it’s how you wear them.
